Commissioner Doug Varney proposes $8M reduction to Mental Health Budget

On November 24, 2014 Tennessee Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services Commissioner Doug Varney presented his FY16 budget proposal to Governor Bill Haslam and his executive staff. The Commissioner recommended reducing the current budget by $8,103,900. Key reductions to community providers were:

• Elimination of Assisted Outpatient Therapy Program $125,000
• Elimination of adolescent outpatient substance abuse services $190,000
• Elimination of adolescent day/evening treatment services statewide $1,219,000
• Elimination of support for all 45 peer support centers statewide. Reduction submitted in previous years. $4,523,600

TMHCA supports the elimination of assisted outpatient therapy program but adamantly opposes elimination of support for any or all 45 peer support centers.
